Spawning a host of similar films including Critters, Ghoulies, Munchies and arguably and possibly cult hits like The Puppet Masters, Warner Brother’s 1984’s Gremlins ended up being a horror comedy classic. Executive produced by none other than legendary Steven Spielberg, the film leaned heavily into black-comedy, alternating between cutesy Christmassy scenes inhabited by the lovable fur-ball mogwai’s and violent sequences committed by their transmuted counterparts. Much like the good and bad natures of the mogwai and gremlins displayed in the movie, such dual-aligned creatures are definitely more common to horror settings (think Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde) than D&D. The closest similarity is probably the transformation of a slaad into its various iterations, yet even these are not nearly so different from their base form as a gremlin is from a mogwai. Overall, there really isn’t a creature quite like a mogwai in any of the more common D&D worlds – so here’s a quick write-up!
Conversion. Mogwai are little different from your typical tiny beast, with few abilities apart from their cuteness. They do have weaknesses, outlined in the movie as rules, and these weaknesses are similar to standard vampire and drow sunlight sensitivities. So far, 5e isn’t too keen on summoning, but the mogwai’s unique water spawn ability is so absolutely fundamental to their design that this rule had to be ‘broken’. (Luckily I did so fully dehydrated, just in case!)
