Zombie of the Week: Draugr

Add some horrific abilities to your zombie horde with extra Zombie options! This week, our horde features abilities ripped from the frozen and greedy grip of zombies found in the 2009 Norwegian horror comedy Dead Snow – the legendary Norse Draugr

When a mortal becomes overwhelmed by greed, their soul may be so corrupt that it lingers for some time around an object if it died apart from this obsession. The presence of even small amounts of necrotic energy in the vicinity of their corpse can allow these souls to force their way back into their body. This is essentially what happens in the horror comedy Dead Snow where World War 2 soldiers emerge from their frozen tombs to hunt down a group of hapless teenagers who have found the zombies most prized possession – their gold! And how can you add these iconic zombies to your game? Just give them the following:



  • Updated Characteristics
    • The zombie’s alignment becomes: lawful evil
    • The zombie’s speed becomes : 30 ft.
    • The zombie’s DexterityIntelligence and Wisdom become: 11, 11, 11
    • The zombie’s passive Perception becomes: 10
    • The zombie has a Language of Common
    • The zombie wears Leather Armor, giving it an AC of : 11
    • The zombie was animated to locate and retrieve 6d12 pieces of gold coins: its treasure.
    • Effect on Challenge Rating: +1/4 CR 
  • Attack Option

Hand Crossbow. Ranged Weapon Attack: +2 to hit, range 30/100 ft., one target. Hit:  3 (1d6) piercing damage.

Effect on Challenge Rating: +1/4 CR 

  • Attack Option

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit:  3 (1d4 + 1) piercing damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 13 Constitution saving throw against disease or become infected with the Draugr virus.

Effect on Challenge Rating: +1/2 CR 

  • Trait Option 

Draugr Virus.A humanoid infected with the virus is Poisoned until the disease is cured. Every hour that elapses, the target must make a DC 13 Constitution saving throw, reducing its hit point maximum by 5 (1d10) on a failure. This reduction to the target’s hit point maximum lasts until the disease is cured.  The target dies if the disease reduces its hit point maximum to 0. A humanoid slain by this virus rises 3 (1d6) rounds later as a draugr, unless the humanoid is restored to life or its body is destroyed.

Effect on Challenge Rating: +1/2 CR 

  • Trait Option 

Treasure Tracker. The draugr knows the distance to and direction of any item of its treasure, even if the item and the draugr are on different planes of existence.

Some Draugr are commanded by a powerful leader gifted with evil magics who gains the following option:

Innate Spellcasting. The draugr commander’s innate spellcasting ability is Wisdom (spell save DC 10). It can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components:

      • 3/day animate dead
      • 1/day bane, danse macabre

Zombie of the Week is a bi-weekly (first & third Friday of the Month) feature that presents Horror Movie Zombie options, including new Traits, Attacks and Lore to add to your 5th Edition zombies. Each option comes with a recommended Challenge which denotes the suggested modified minimum CR rating for a zombie or undead that may be best suited for that particular option.
