Monster of the Week: Shimmer Bear

It’s making something new.

Films Synopsis: Released in 2018, Director Alex Garland’s Annihilation takes viewers into the warped realm of an alien being known only as the Shimmer. The shimmer has the ability to scramble the world around it, mixing nature and distorting the DNA of every living thing it comes in contact with.

Inside Area X, which is what the scientists call the area the Shimmer has taken over, animals and plants meld into bizarre mutated forms, evidencing a blend of disparate parts. The harrowing film follows four female researchers as they journey into the heart of Area X to discover the nature of the Shimmer. Along the way, they encounter the modified beings affected by the Shimmer, and reveal the nature of their own psyche’s in the process.

Designed by effects supervisor Andrew Whitehurst, the annihilation bear, as it’s popularly known, is one terrifying result of the Shimmer’s melding capabilities. With a mournful cry, it makes a horrific adversary – and an excellent monster!

If you see something that looks like it needs improving, re-balancing, editing or formatting, please leave a comment or shoot me an email ! I want these designs to be the best they can be!

The shimmer bear is a bear, but it uses its mimicry to lure victims, humans especially, to its doom. About as stealthy as a grizzly, the shimmer bear moves in quickly once it finds prey or is able to bring the prey to it.

A shimmer bear makes an excellent addition to a campaign where the Far Realm has touched the material plane. They could the first creature encountered, letting the party know that world has changed…

The shimmer bear was a quick conversion – a grizzly stats with the addition of the mimicry trait from kenku’s and the ghost’s horrifying visage. Cut and dry!

But what do you think will the bears cries cause your party to take pity on its sad transition? Or will its haunting mimicry lure an unsuspecting member to their doom? Download my rendition of a Shimmer Bear in pdf format for your campaign and terrify your players with the sounds of death.
