Zombie of the Week: WWZ (2013)| New 5th Edition Monster

Based on the 2006 novel of the same name by Max Brooks, 2013’s World War Z tells the story of Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt), a former United Nations investigator who must travel the world to find a way to stop a zombie pandemic. The zombies of the film are fast, cunning and possess the ability to swarm and coordinate attacks. They also have the ability to detect sickness in their victims, avoiding those who are immune to their virus.

Illness Aversion. The zombie senses humanoids within 60 feet of it that are poisoned or diseased at will. This trait otherwise works like the detect poison and disease spell but isn’t itself magical. The zombie does not actively attempt to bite or attack any humanoid it detects as being poisoned or diseased, but will defend itself if attacked.

Pack Tactics. The zombie has advantage on an Attack roll against a creature if at least one of the zombie’s allies is within 5 ft. of the creature and the ally isn’t Incapacitated.

Pillar Tactics. The zombie can squeeze into a space occupied by another zombie with the pillar trait. If two zombies are squeezing in the same space, the zombie can vertically climb through the space occupied by the zombies without needing to make an ability check.

Undead Fortitude. If damage reduces the zombie to 0 hit points, it must make a Constitution saving throw with a DC of 5 + the damage taken, unless the damage is radiant or from a critical hit. On a success, the zombie drops to 1 hit point instead.

WWZ Virus. At the end of each of its turns a creature infected with WWZ virus takes 3 (1d6) necrotic damage. A WWZ-infected target dies if it drops to 0 hit points, then rises at the beginning of the next round as a WWZ zombie.

ACTIONS

Multiattack. The zombie makes two melee attacks, only one of which can be a bite.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target Hit: 8 (2d4 + 3) piercing damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 13 Constitution saving throw against disease or become infected with the WWZ Virus.

Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (2d6 + 2) bludgeoning damage.Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target Hit: 8 (2d4 + 3) piercing damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 13 Constitution saving throw against disease or become infected with the WWZ Virus.
